Amigos Alados 20 - 21

Tax deductible
Dear Friends,

Amigos Alados, the volunteer-directed, environmental education nonprofit we founded in 2007, needs your support to continue our work in bringing children in the Western U.S. and Mexico together in the study of migratory birds and how we can protect them and their habitats.

In spite of the quarantine this spring, we have had a great 2019 - 2020 year, serving 1,270 students in the western United States and Mexico. We are busily planning how we will serve our students in the coming school year, whether school is held in person or on-line.

We are excited to be working with Jalisco’s Secretary of the Environment, Sergio Graf, and the directors of three large inter-municipal juntas in Jalisco to develop an agreement for how we will deliver watershed education to classes in their watersheds this coming school year. For years we have been discussing ways to engage our students in meaningful and positive actions to save birds and their habitats, and this new work will help us realize our goals.

17 out of our 27 Amigos Alados teachers in California belong to STRAW (Students and Teachers Restoring a Watershed, for which Alison also serves as a faculty member) as well as Amigos Alados. The students of these teachers participate in watershed studies and a hands-on environmental restoration project. Therefore, our new agreement with the state of Jalisco to bring watershed education to classes in three watershed areas brings symmetry to our California and Jalisco programs.

Last year a report released by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) stated that by mid-century, one million species of plants and animals could disappear, including thousands of birds. Your support of Amigos Alados’ work is all the more important so that our children develop a sense of environmental stewardship and friendship beyond borders.

Here are some examples of what your donation to Amigos Alados can do:

*  $5 pays for two bird booklets
*  $25 pays for one teacher’s manual in California
*  $80 pays for one ornithologist’s visit to a Mexican classroom (transportation & lodging)
*  $150 pays for sending one packet of pen pal letters to Mexico via DHL
*  $300 pays for one Mexican classroom’s participation in Amigos Alados for a year

Your donations will go to our fiscal sponsor, Environment for the Americas, which  provides Amigos Alados with administrative support and nonprofit 501(c)(3) status.

We hope you can help us to meet our fundraising goals so that we can continue delivering top-notch environmental education to students in the Western United States and Mexico!
