Meet Amias (uh-MY-us). Amias is a very special boy. He has eight teeth, ten fingers, and TWELVE toes! That's right, this little guy was born with Polydactyly, which is the occurrence of an extra digit, either fused together or separate, from other digits on the hands or feet. In Amias' case, he has an extra fused bone on both of his big toes—his left one is almost double the size of a "normal" big toe.
Fortunately, this hasn't slowed him down yet. His favorite activities include crawling, eating, singin’ the blues, attempting to eat lint and/or leaves and cuddling with mom and dad. We know these extra digits make him extra special, however, an assessment from a pediatric orthopedic surgeon recommended surgery because he will not be able to wear shoes due to the width of his feet. Even now he can only wear socks or soft shoes. This could lead to significant disruptions in this sweet little guy’s life—his gait may be affected and he would never be able to play traditional sports. We love him just the way he is, but know this is the best decision for him in the long term.
Mom and dad are both super hard workers and hate asking for help. But unfortunately, our work in the health and human services industries isn't exactly the most lucrative. Mom works to end homelessness in Ocala, and dad provides nursing services to individuals with cancer. It's hard, meaningful work, but doesn't come with the best health insurance plans or ritzy salaries. As a result, we need a little boost from our friends, family , and community to get us through this major life event.
