Support Mental Health Training for Teachers!

Tax deductible
Support American Muslim Health Professionals (AMHP) along with the Council of Islamic Schools in North America and the Islamic Schools League of America in our efforts to address the mental health crisis in America.

Together, we are planning to provide Mental Health First Aid training to teachers at Islamic schools. This will empower teachers to have the skills needed to help support students in whatever they may be going through.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an evidence-based program from the National Council for Mental Well-Being which introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of common mental health illnesses like anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and addiction.

Similar to how CPR training helps a layperson assist an individual following a heart attack, MHFA teaches non-mental health professionals how to give first aid to individuals experiencing a mental health crisis and/or who are in the early stages of a mental health disorder. Youth MHFA is for adults age 18 or older who work with youth, or otherwise are interested in understanding how mental illness can impact youth.

WHY SHOULD EDUCATORS GET CERTIFIED IN YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID (MHFA)?

  • 18% of Muslim youth experience depressive symptoms.
  • Nearly 40% of Muslim youth seek help from school.
  • Racism, religious discrimination, and identity struggles have negative impacts on the mental health of Muslim youth.
  • In order to promote the mental well-being of Muslim youth within schools, it is imperative for educators to receive thorough training in order to recognize the signs and signals of mental health problems in Muslim youth and respond with empathy and care.
