Teaching in American Samoa 2017

Donation protected
Hi! My name is Ali Kiviat and I am a 23-year-old college graduate from Virginia Tech. After I graduated, I knew I wanted to do something adventurous and impactful. I was thrilled to be accepted into a volunteer teaching program in American Samoa where I taught English/Language Arts to 6th grade students.

After spending a year teaching in American Samoa, I came to realize the difficulties teachers go through every day and the learning curve that is involved in teaching. At the end of the year, I realized that my job there was not finished. I had an incredible year (see here for highlights), but I knew that I could do more for my students. For this reason, I will be returning to American Samoa to finish the job that I started.

Unfortunately, school supplies are very expensive and are scarce on-island. Often, I had students sitting on the floor because there were not enough desks or had students sharing pencils and notebooks because they did not have one of their own. I was unable to carry out fun and engaging lessons because I did not have the supplies to do so, such as worksheets, scissors, markers, and glue. Please consider supporting my cause so that I can buy ample school supplies for my classroom.

Additionally, navigating the island without a car proved to be difficult. Having a car would exponentially increase my quality of life this year. I would be able to easily go to the grocery store and transport groceries, bring students' notebooks home with me to grade, and be able to assist the new volunteer teachers who are just beginning to get the hang of life in American Samoa, among other things.

All donations would go towards the purchasing of a used car as well as school supplies. These school supplies include, but are not limited to, pencils, pens, scissors, glue, notebooks, looseleaf paper, printer paper, markers, colored pencils, crayons, erasers, and incentives for students.

Any donation of any size would be greatly appreciated by me, my students, and the new volunteer teachers. If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing this page with your friends and family. Thank you for your time and in advance for any donation or support!
