American painter, Danielle Dygert, will be traveling through twelve National Forests to create a continuous 5’x90’ oil painting. The work will be influenced by interactions in the following major cities (not limited to), Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Zion, Denver, Boulder, Santa Fe, Austin, New Orleans, Chicago, Boston, New York, Washington D.C., Richmond, Charlotte, Atlanta, Savannah, Jacksonville, Tampa.
This work will be displayed at SPAACES Gallery in Sarasota, FL in April 2021.

Project Abstract:
American mythos aims to document the disconnect between the stories we tell and the realities we face. This large-scale oil painting is a reflection and documentation of a National consciousness. It revisits fables traditionally used to describe heroism, infamy, freedom and success which often avoided true discussions of America and its people.
This body of work explores how these traditional narratives have done little to help contemporary challenges. We pass laws to end racial discrimination, yet lack the resolve to create a more equitable society. We welcome the idea of cultural pluralism, yet we are still grappling with ethical immigration. We champion prosperity for all, but live in a county where families are still homeless. We remain the only first world country without universal healthcare, even in the midst of a national pandemic. We want to grow a better future for the next generation, but have yet to take action towards fighting the global climate and agricultural crisis.
With information and misinformation being shared online globally, the American consciousness combats the tradition, behavioral patterns and governmental policies that undermine freedom and justice for all.
Your support will go directly to living expenses during this research project. I will be boon-docking at the 12 national forests, meaning living rent-free by primitive camping. I am traveling with my young pup, Apollo. This is a primitive research project that will be broken up by a few days in the major cities about every 2 weeks. Living expenses, though reduced by this nomadic lifestyle, still amount to $1,000+ per month. This includes car payments, insurance, food, gas, and personal expenses.
Your support will enable me to fully experience the current state of our nation.
