The GoFundMe proposal supports a unique and important media project: a rolling documentary and ultimately a photobook that exemplifies this nation’s perceptions of the American Dream in 2018. As two young women who are concerned about the future of humanity, we want to answer the essential questions that face our generation today. We will embark on a solitary cycling journey across the US and use our ethnographic, analytical and creative skills to uncover and retell the seemingly long-gone American Dream. After recently graduating from college during the most heated political climate we have faced in our lifetimes, we decided together to search for our own truth, from the ground up, or rather ‘wheel up’.
The bike journey will begin in Jacksonville, Florida and end in San Francisco, California. We are interested in acquiring a media sponsor who can help us distribute what we publish during the journey and after. We believe that the stories we will collect are of great importance because a primary influencer of the growing cultural, political and social divides in the US is a lack of empathy. In other words, an inability to understand the perceptions of individuals living in conditions vastly different from one’s own. Therefore, our material is valuable to any media organization who seeks to uphold truth above all else and wishes to dissect the ethical issues that plague western civilization today.
We hope that the various perspectives found by way of a two-wheel journey will have the potential to impact our national dialogue. The recent national election has laid bare the socio-cultural fault lines that run across the country, leaving Americans grasping for ways to understand what is happening and, ultimately, one another. The American Dream on Two Wheels offers a breath of fresh air. It is a vehicle for the American people to ask the question — who are we and why are we still in this together?
We seek to answer such questions and visually portray the diversity surrounding today’s most important issues and the people most impacted. Ultimately, we would like to humanize people across all walks of life, first and foremost by being in our most vulnerable states, on our bikes, with only the clothes on our backs and equipment to document.
Your contribution will help fuel this journey from food to camping and motel costs, and finally to publishing and exhibition costs. We currently have the minimum resources we need to complete the trip. Extra funds will allow us to go off the beaten path, dig deeper into stories we find especially compelling, and attend events, tours, and social gatherings that require a fee. The most important allocation of funds will be publishing. Our product will be the culmination of all our hard work, and what's most important to us is sharing it with the rest of the world.
