A Match For Mailyna

Donation protected
Please consider helping our family keep the focus on Mailyna & getting her well again.

For the past 11 1/2 years, Mailyna's life has been full of blood transfusions, hospital visits, surgeries, medications & appointments. She was born with a blood disorder called Beta Thalassemia Major, which require chronic blood transfusions every three weeks since she was 6 months old, to sustain her bodies deficiency to produce red blood cells. Those life saving transfusion caused excess iron buildup in her liver, heart & other vital organs, which require iron chelation through daily medication. In all of her clinic visits, she has had 150 blood transfusions! Through it all, she maintains a strong, positive outlook in her life. Mailyna is a vibrant middle schooler who dances Tahitian, throws kids twice her size in Eskrima and maintains balance practicing yoga. Her giant heart is always thinking of others and caring for her two younger sisters, Malia & Jaslyne.

On April 24, Mailyna will be entering UCSF Medical Center to begin the bone marrow transplant process. She will undergo surgery her first day to replace her portocath currently used for transfusions, with a broviac line. 11 days of chemo therapy will follow, to eliminate her thalassemia making bone marrow. On the 12th day, she will receive the ultimate gift from a complete stranger. An unknown angel will be giving a small part of themselves, that will give Mailyna a new life. After another 4 weeks in the hospital to rebuild her antibodies, she will be released home, where she will remain in isolation while she continues to heal and build back her immune system.

Our hope is that she will be well enough to return to school in the winter, and continue the 7th grade with her peers. While there will be a few years of aftercare, a bone marrow transplant is the only cure for Beta Thalassemia Major. She looks forward to a normal life that is free of medications or hospital visits.

While Mailyna does have medical insurance, the cost of copays, traveling expenses to and from the hospital, parking, medications, lost wages from time off to care for her, etc, are quickly building up. To help with these expenses, Mailyna's family has set up a special Fund to collect donations on her behalf. Please consider helping with the financial aspect so that our family can focus on Mailyna and her recovery.
