Amata's(Amy's) Army Fundraiser!
Donation protected
Hello,
My name is Gwendilin and I am the Founder of Birch Haven Rescue & Rehabilitation Services(BHRR)located in Eastern Ontario. We are a federally registered NPO that has been in operation since 1996. We are an all volunteer, foster-based Giant breed/honourary Giants with a strong focus on the special needs animals rescue organization.
On October 30th, 2024, we were asked to assist a 5 month old Rottie puppy that had had trauma to the face, and back end. There are also scars around the jaw and side of face.
From the shelter:
“She is very sweet, typical puppy. Very friendly, wants to meet everyone, wants everyone to pet her or give her treats. Her left eye has been ‘traumatised’ (blind in that eye & her face is now misshapen) & she has an avulsion fracture on a back limb.”
On November 17th, we brought this Rottie into our Rescue - and I called her Amata(Amy). Amata – meaning blessed in Latin AKA Amy, meaning beloved.
Upon immediate arrival at the Hospital, a thorough exam was done, bloodwork, x-rays under sedation as we knew that she would be incredibly painful were also done. We updated her on vaccines, dispensed pain medication - Gabapentin and Metacam, along with Trazodone as needed, and also placed her on de-wormer, flea, tick and heartworm preventative. We bought three bags of PVD Essential Care Large Breed Puppy food and also several boxes of Forti Flora.
She was also medically boarded for a period of time to ensure that all of her medical needs were being properly addressed prior to springing her out and into foster care!
The initial x-rays made it appear that both of her back legs were broken.
Upon review by not one, not two yet three ortho specialists and then as of January 9th, a 4th ortho specialist - and three rounds of x-rays, it has been confirmed that it is only her back right leg - avulsion fracture and knee that is badly damaged/broken. We also confirmed that her shoulders were ok by doing repeat x-rays on November 26th. Two ortho specialists had some concern after reviewing the November 17th x-rays, and we wanted to be sure that nothing was being missed.
Her left eye also has been assessed in depth by no less than 6 Vets. This left eye will require an enucleation.
Decisions are not made lightly at BHRR and all information is gathered to ensure that the best decisions possible for the well being of the animals in our care are made.
Our options for that leg:
1) Do nothing - and she lives a life in pain - it has fused - if she had been surrendered to the shelter sooner - and arthritis is already noted
2) Do an Ortho Surgery - marginal/minimum up to possibly 50% improvement 'may be' possible by doing surgery yet still a life of pain/arthritis & quite possibly still have to amputate at a later date due to complications, surgery failed etc.
3) Amputate - Dogs can do great as either a front end or back end tri-pod. She has known a life of nothing but pain and my promise to here was to give her a future without pain too.
Severa fundraisers were done, and between them, plus some kind donations from the community, we are heading into these two surgeries - Date TBD - with a zero balance on her account.
She is such a deserving, worthy puppy!
Yes, as always, I do appreciate that we could 'assist' a number of other dogs for the money I am hoping to raise - $10,000, yet my mandate since the inception of BHRR back in March 1996 has been to be there for the special needs. The ones that others cannot or will not assist. The ones that are equally deserving, and worthy that others failed, and failed miserably.
We now are are waiting for a date to have her back right leg amputated and to remove that left eye at the same time.
This fundraiser is to work to raise much needed funds for those two surgeries, her post-op rehabilitation care, medications, food, therapy etc. that shall be required.
Below is the link to her detailed individual blog to stay updated on her progress.
She is residing in a loving foster home at this time, getting to be a puppy - has canine friends, is continuing to work on her manners - she is SO smart! - and to continue building up much needed muscle mass/tone in preparation for her surgeries.
I am sincerely hoping that people will join Miss Amy's Army and support her with much needed funds for her Bills.
