Amani Library & Technology Center

Donation protected
Our scholars are academically accomplished, intellectually curious, and civically engaged young people who tackle challenges diligently and creatively.    Please partner with us give them a library and technology center to further ACHIEVE.

As a hub for learning in public schools and the primary source of books for students, every single school needs a library for its student community.  In addition to providing access to books, school libraries foster a love of learning and have a positive effect on reading achievement and may offset the impact of poverty.  School libraries not only help students read more, but also help them learn how to use and process information better and to perform better on achievement tests.

In Spring 2015, Amani received a generous donation of thousands of books from the Crecca Family of Pennsylvania.  Later, in December 2015, Amani received a generous donation from the Jackson-Howard Family to begin making the Louise Harris Howard 21st Century Learning Center a reality.  With your help we can reach our goal of raising $50,000 in order to be able to provide our scholars with a library and technology center by the first day of this upcoming 2016-2017 school year.

Our Story

Opening its doors in 2011, Amani Public Charter School’s mission is to provide 100% of Mount Vernon students who attend the school from 5th through 8th grade with the academic and critical thinking skills necessary to succeed in competitive high school programs, college and the career of their choice.  In its first year, the school was housed in rented church space.  As the school expanded over the course of several years, the school had to rent additional space in multiple locations.  Fortunately, in its fourth year, the school was able to come together in a single dedicated school building.

In accomplishing this meaningful goal for the entire Amani community, a top priority for the school is to create a library and technology center that will serve as a hub for the school.  The Louise Harris Howard 21st Century Learning Center will provide a space that will be utilized by the entire Amani community.  The space will be comprised of two main areas:

(1)    the Norma Veronica Nieta Howard Library which will serve as a place for students to read, conduct research, and complete projects; and

(2)    the Technology Center, which will serve as a dedicated place where students are dynamically involved in 21st century learning.

Our Vision

The Louise Harris Howard 21st Century Learning Center (the “Learning Center”) is a multi-purpose, multi-function workspace for teaching and learning, aligned with the mission of the school.  The Learning Center will be a fluid space comprised of a lending and reference library, as well as a technology lab that centers on teaching technology usage, software coding and digital citizenship.

The Norma Veronica Nieta Howard Library (the “Library”) will be a conventional library where full classes and small groups will visit periodically throughout the day and after-school.  A typical visit lasts the length of a class period, approximately 40 minutes.  Additionally, the school community will conduct research and complete projects in the space.

The technology center  serves a diverse range of functions.  Full classes will be taught there, in which every student has simultaneous access to computing devices.  Up to 28 students may be seated at one time, along with two instructors.  In an alternative configuration, the lab will host two or three groups of 4 students, such as an after-school program.  Within the technology lab there are three specific course content areas:

(1)    technology usage;
(2)    software coding; and
(3)    digital citizenship.

Finally, the lab will be used by as few as one or two individuals at a time in the production of media materials related to various school activities.

 Our Plan

We anticipate the Learning Center will support the following general use cases:
