As many of you know, I have now lived in the UK for a very long time and I have made my life here. The past few years have been full of rather terrifying visa issues that at times meant that I thought I would have to leave London, resulting in the loss of everything that I have here.
I have been in London for so long that I now have the opportunity to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain. If approved, this means that I would no longer need a visa to reside in the UK. I would have the right to live and work here indefinitely, making my future and my life here finally secure.
I have lived in London for ten years now, which is practically my entire adult life. The thought of having to start over in America at the age of 30 with no job, no car, no friends, no phone and no home is absolutely terrifying and utterly heart-breaking. London is my home and London is where I feel I belong.
The application process for Indefinite Leave to Remain is expensive and time consuming. The fees rise every year and, because my application is not as straightforward as I would like, I need to use a lawyer to make a case for me so that my application will be approved. The fee to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain is £2,297 and the fee for the lawyer will be around £1000. I did not think I would be going through this process for another two years, so I am not financially prepared for it to be happening now. I have just finished my MBA and I am still searching for a full-time job, meaning that I have no savings to draw upon. However, if I do not make an application, I will be forced to leave the UK at the end of January, leaving me with no choice by to apply now.
This is where I must turn to you. I know that many of you in the UK do not want me to be forced to leave and I know many of you in the States only want to see me happy. I’m asking for help in being able to pay the visa fees and the lawyer’s fees so that I can secure my future in London. Whatever you can afford to give, any little bit helps! Know that I appreciate every £20 (or $20 if that’s your currency). Your support will literally change the course of my life by allowing me to remain in the city I love.
Below is a breakdown of where the funds will be going
£50 - fee to take the Life in the UK test
£2,297 - cost for the ILR application
£1000 (approx) - lawyer fees
£250 to cover the fees that GoFundMe skims off the top!
