Amanda’s Leukemia Battle

We spent two years trying to have a baby.  In August of 2017 we were told that she was pregnant.  I honestly didn’t think I would be as happy as I was, but as a couple weeks went by and watching how happy my wife was it really made me anticipate the months and years ahead.

Amanda started having some issues, that was ridden off as pregnancy horomones.  September 1st at 11pm she started spiking a fever so I drove her to the ER where she works as a phlebotomist.  She was admitted and we were given our first ultrasound of the baby while waiting for blood test results.  We expected to simply hear that she was experiencing something with the pregnancy, never in a million years would we have anticipated hearing the words Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

We were flown that same night to OHSU where we were told that if we kept the baby, it would kill Amanda along with the unborn.  It was probably the hardest decision of our lives, even when the answer was an obvious one.

After that she was given a bone marrow biopsy which showed a rare strain of leukemia that is highly aggressive and required a bone marrow transplant.  Her first month of induction was a success and she was sent home in remission to prepare for the transplant which we would later discover would come from her sister.

Fast forward to today.  She is fighting some side effects of the transplant but otherwise has been a fantastic success.  She is on day 45 of her 100 days spent away from home because she has to be close to OHSU.  Medically, she is doing good and we are praying she continues down the road to a full recovery.

I am a bit of a proud person.  I have been told I should start a Go Fund Me for a while but financially we have overcome every hurdle without the need of outside help for the past 6 months.   Unfortunately that can only last so long and the stress it is causing when we should be planning our future together is an added stress we would like to avoid.

Due to the medical bills along with weekly back and forth trips to Portland which range about $120 per week because of gas and more oil changes than I ever planned on needing, and the rest of our usual bills and mortgage payments on a house we bought not even a year and a half ago, it’s more than we can handle alone.  One of the medications alone costs more than our mortgage payment every month.

With a heavy heart I send this to all my friends and anyone they are willing to share it with.  She has overcome more than anyone, any mother ever should.  Like everyone with cancer, she never asked for this.  She didn’t deserve this.  But if there is anything I can do to make sure she has a home to return to, without worry on how we are going to make it, I will.

Thank you.  I will update as much as possible.
