This was a difficult decision for me to ask for financial assistance as I am a very strong, independent woman who has always held multiple jobs to maintain my household and lifestyle all on my own, but this is truly a time of need for me. I have been off of work since March 2025 with no foreseeable return to work date.
I have been battling health issues since June of 2024, which led to hospital stays as well as being referred to Stanford specialists. I received an extremely rare diagnosis in December 2024: an inherited autoinflammatory disorder called Deficiency of Interleukin 1 Receptor Antagonist (DIRA). There are less than 50 cases worldwide and from my understanding, I may be the first case in the United States. This disease typically onsets at birth and if left untreated, the babies die. I was fortunate enough to not show any symptoms until the age of 35, making my case even more extraordinary.
With little known about this disease, I hit brick walls with the doctors in California. I advocated for myself and began to do my own research, which led me to finding a specialist in Boston who is willing to take on my case. I am hopeful and have faith that I will finally receive the proper care, support, and guidance in Boston.
With this specialist being out of state, video visits are legally not an option and I foresee having to travel to Boston many times, with my first appointment being October 9th, 2025. The financial assistance will be used towards airfare, hotel stays, other traveling expenses, and out-of-pocket health care costs. My daughter, Calliope, will be accompanying me on my travels as I am a single mother and she is my greatest support system.
I have also found great healing in alternative and holistic medicine such as acupuncture, somatic healing, and energy work, but have not been able to keep up with the costs.
I was guided to share my story and ask for financial assistance with an overwhelming feeling that I have many people who love and support me and Calliope. If you are led to assist in any way, I will be forever grateful for your generosity.
I am more than happy to answer any questions that you may have.
With Love & Light
Alyssia Denae
