By Husbands Side 645 Days &Counting

My dad has been bedridden in hospitals and nursing facilities for 645 consecutive days now and counting for pneumonia and copd. My mom visits him every single day, without taking any days off, since he became hospitalized in May 2014.  She has been doing this for almost 2 years now. She used to arrive at 5 am, but nowadays, she arrives at 6:40 am each morning and stays until 5 pm.

I honestly feel my dad is alive and has not lost the will to live despite being stuck behind 4 white walls and a tv for almost 2 years because of my mom. 10-12 hours a day, 7 days a week she is at the hospital. I've never seen anyone more devoted to another human being. In addition to cleaning after him, she makes sure he gets his meds and breathing treatments on time and brings him her home cooking each day. She gives him haircuts and shaves his stubble. She is there for him when he hallucinates or is sometimes delirious. Nurses have told her that they have never seen anyone like her in all their years working in the medical field.

Below is a page from her notebook where she keeps meticulous notes on my dad's care. In it, she tells me she records details, such as when the doctor came, when he took his meds, even when he had his bowel movements. Almost 2 years later, the notebook has gotten full and raggedy.

It's heartbreaking to see my mom grow visibly more frail due to this schedule. I don't want her to be next to lie on a hospital bed. I've pleaded with her to please take a day off, that the nurses will look after Dad. It's true, my mom adores the nurses she's met and has become friends with many of them. She likes to buy little snacks for them to show her appreciation for their hard work in what little way she can afford. But my mom and dad have been together for 45 years. He is the only man my mom has ever loved. She has been there for him (and me) through all of life's hardships no matter how difficult.

Below is the last picture I have of them together and happy. This was taken 2 months before he got pneumonia and became hospitalized.

Right now, there are huge medical bills and expenses that insurance won't cover, which keeps my mom up at night and gives her anxiety during the day.  She has a chronic stomach ulcer from the stress and is losing her hair. She also gets night sweats and is constantly fatigued. And with her family history of stomach cancer, I really want her to see a specialist. Today, she opened another unexpected large bill on the car ride home from seeing Dad, which caused her so much stress and stomach pain, that she curled up in a fetal position in the back seat. When she got home, she threw up and  then went to lie down. That was the breaking point for me, and why I decided to write here today.

My mom doesn't know what GoFundMe is, but she knows what human kindness is, and any donation would mean a lot to her. Thank you for your support.
