Boldly brazen and ungraceful, YA novel Altruists is audaciously loyal to the coming-of-age female experience – in particular, for those who are visually impaired. Altruists follows teenage twin sisters Iris, who is blind, and Adair, who has her sight, from spring to summer as they learn what it means to be an altruist. Witty and sarcastic Adair’s abrasive exterior leads her to be unlucky in love while the mindful Iris is faced with navigating independence in a sightless world. From Jane Austen literature to Fetty Wap lyrics to tampons with pink plastic applicators, Altruists snatches back the idea of coming-of-age.
Not only is this novel important for young women, but it is particularly invaluable for those who are visually impaired. It is imperative to me that this book be published in Braille before any ink-printed copies are printed or sold. I firmly believe in putting the needs of those who are differently abled first. Due to the extensive translating and formatting that is required to print even a single book in Braille, the cost of production is exorbitant. Your charity is appreciated in making this story accessible to all. The goal of this campaign is to fund five Braille copies of Altruists, which will be distributed to libraries and learning centers for individuals who are visually impaired. Neither myself nor Reecy Publishing will be profiting off of the distribution of the Braille editions of Altruists. I would be overwhelmed with gratitude to be able to proceed with production by December 2017.
About the author: Kayla Harris received her Bachelors of Arts from UC Berkeley and her Masters of Fine Arts from Mount St. Mary’s University. She runs programs for underprivileged, differently abled, and marginalized teens at a youth center.
