Alternative Kilkenny Arts Festival 2019

Alternative Kilkenny Arts (AKA) is a grassroots community arts festival now in it's fifth year.

Each year AKA compiles a fantastic programme of events that spans the city and county of Kilkenny, Ireland. Run by a small group of volunteers, AKA provides a much needed platform for local and national artists to showcase their work during the Summer festival season.

This year we have over seventy events in our programme, meaning over a hundred artists! We are beyond excited. We look forward to welcoming thousands of audience members to enjoy the Visual Arts exhibitions, Spoken Word, Comedy, Theatre, Music and Workshops that make up the #AKA19 festival programme.

In order to do our very best to support AKA participants and audiences, we are asking for your help. This year, for the very first time we are lucky enough to have a space to set up a festival Information Point that will be open for the duration of the festival. In order to make this happen we need to buy insurance, and do a small revamp of the building and to make it fit for use. This is a cost we haven't had in past years, but one that will enable us to engage with the public, and showcase the participants work on a whole new level.  The Information Point will allow us to give people the in depth information they need on all programme participants, directions to shows, help potential audience members to purchase tickets, and hopefully even have some pop up events on site.

We wish to keep festival participation free of charge for the artists involved. This means we do not charge artists for their programme space, nor do we take commission on artworks sold, or ticket bookings. We want to be able to keep this model, and to do so we need an extra helping hand from you, the public, to support our campaign.

Your support will benefit the programme artists, to get greater visibility and to potentially reach new heights in their careers by showcasing their work with AKA. It will also help the public by enabling them to gain more information about our festival programme which includes more than 40 free events.

AKA is made by Kilkenny artists for Kilkenny artists. With community at our core, we wish to make #aka19 the best one yet! With your support we believe we can do so.

We are a small voluntary team of five people keeping the AKA boat afloat, and we welcome any support you think you can give to help us to produce another great festival. We invite you to look at our #aka18 video and have a peek at the wonderful world of AKA.

Many thanks to everyone who helps us with this campaign by giving us a few bob, to sharing and spreading the word. We couldn't do this with out you and we are eternally grateful. Here's to community arts!
