<div>Hello, my name is Tiffany Lawler. My mother-in-law, Brenda Lawler, is currently battling ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) aka Lou Gehrig’s disease. Patient’s that are diagnosed with ALS are given an average life expectancy of 2-5 years. Brenda was diagnosed in 2021 after experiencing symptoms for 1 year. We as a family are devastated that this tortuous disease has entered our lives. Brenda, Steve, their boys (Andy Lawler, Joseph Lawler, Tony Lawler, and Danny Lawler) along with their multiple friends and family are being called to help in any way they can to help lift this terrible burden. We are learning quickly that many things about this disease are not covered by insurance or Medicare. Some of the medications that we are trying to start are upwards of $200,000 per month. Many need to go through insurance prior authorizations and appeals for coverage. We are incredibly grateful for the ALS Association’s help in providing adaptive equipment and support throughout this very difficult time. They are invaluable. However, one particular expense that they do not cover is a handicap/wheelchair accessible van. Brenda and Steve’s goal is to make it up to the North Shore/Lake Superior area, a place that is near and dear to their hearts before Winter comes and her condition worsens to the point that she can no longer safely travel. We are so grateful for any help you can offer in helping our family during this heartbreaking time. I called this the ALS challenge 2.0, because back in 2014 a viral fund raiser of millions of people dumping buckets of ice on their heads and pledging money to fight for a cure for ALS was once a movement that got the ball rolling on research, treatment, and support for those that are suffering with ALS. Now, this viral fundraiser that was nearly 10 years ago is literally in our home. It’s real now. The muscle wasting, the emotional pain, the appointments, the equipment, multiple appointments, paperwork, etc. etc. is now part of our lives.
