Alpha's Post-transplant Fund
Donation protected
My friend and former student, Alpha Dozon, recently underwent a successful kidney transplant, but despite working 2 jobs, is unable to afford the $700/month (his 20% copay) for the post-transplant medicine and care, which could continue for 3 years. This includes the anti-rejection drugs and the many follow up tests and appointments.
I met Alpha in 2005 when he enrolled in an Adult Education class I was teaching. He had just arrived in Omaha from a refugee camp in Sierra Leone where he lived for 12 years after fleeing the violent civil war in Liberia.
From the time he arrived in the U.S. he has been a self-sufficient, working, tax-paying Omahan. He also helps to support family still in Liberia. In 2011 he achieved his U.S. citizenship! In 2012 he was diagnosed with kidney failure, started dialysis, and was placed on the transplant waiting list. He continued to work, at times 2 jobs, until his illness forced him to quit.
Now, just 1 month after the surgery, he is working again. He also wants to return to classes at the Community College to continue pursuing an Associates Degree in business. I have always been impressed with his optimism and persistence in everything he does, despite the many hardships he has faced.
Please consider making a donation to ease some of the burden for Alpha. Thank you.
