This is my beautiful sister, Allyson. She is 26 years old, a hair stylist and model. On April 13th she embarked on a true journey:a fight for her life when she heard the doctor say, "You have breast cancer."
She will be having a bilateral mastectomy on May 20th followed with reconstructive surgery six weeks later. Her journey will also include undergoing chemotherapy treatments; all at the age of 26. Many of you reading this have either had the unfortunate and devastating news of being diagnosed with breast cancer or you have a friend/family member that was diagnosed with a form of cancer at some point. It not only affects a patient's physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing, but being diagnosed with cancer has a significant financial impact on the patient and their families.
Most patients, like Allyson, incur additional costs as a result of a breast cancer diagnosis. These can include direct medical costs such as those associated with seeing oncologists, breast surgeons, plastic surgeons, and radiation oncologists. Then there are costs associated with buying medications to help alleviate the symptoms of cancer and the side-effects of treatment. For many patients, like my sister Allyson, the additional costs incurred can be substantial.
With all of your help, we can bring Allyson some relief during her journey by reducing this financial burden of breast cancer care in her fight to beat breast cancer!
