Ally's Tuition for NYT Academy
Donation protected
Hello, everyone! My name is Allyson Roche, and I'm a 16-year-old aspiring journalist from Los Angeles, California. I was recently accepted into the New York Times NYC Summer Academy 's journalism program, and due to the overwhelming costs, I am raising money to pay for the tuition.
This incredible opportunity will immerse me in the culture of New York City, a place where my family has rich history, but I have yet to explore. And what better way to explore the city through writing and journalism? At the Academy, I will be participating in classes led by journalists from the Times in the 2-week-program, Writing in the Big City: Reporting in New York.
Based on my resume and essays, I was granted a $2,000 scholarship. Unfortunately, that is not enough to cover the costs. The program is originally $5,750, and with my scholarship, that comes to $3,750. This is an opportunity of a lifetime and I do not want to pass it up. Any donation towards expanding my education would be greatly appreciated. So here's a little bit about me:
I'm the Co-Founder of ForthWrite Magazine, an online publication produced by teens for teens, that focuses on U.S. politics and current events. Since our launch in September of 2017, we have acquired contributors from across the US and even the UK. I've interviewed some of today's prominent political journalists including CNN's Chief Political Correspondent Dana Bash, Brooke Baldwin, John Vause, and more.
In December, I was one of 50 Teen Vogue readers to earn the Teen Vogue Summit Award. Based on essays I wrote, I was granted a scholarship to attend the 2-day event, which featured conversations with Hillary Rodham Clinton, Ava DuVernay, Maxine Waters, and more. I participated in mentor sessions with Compton's Mayor Aja Brown and the founders of Black Lives Matter, Patrisse Cullors and Alicia Garza.
I also participate in Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti's Youth Council, where I meet with my cohort each month to discuss and address problems effecting our community.
Thank you so much for reading, y'all, and I'd love it if you could help! :)
