………SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES……..

Firstly, thank you for showing an interest in supporting our campaign. Bound for this year’s festival at the Edinburgh Fringe, Stratford upon Avon’s own TREAD THE BOARDS THEATRE COMPANY is proud to be exploring Shakespeare’s dark tragedy ‘Macbeth’ with an all-female cast. As an ensemble we are excited to present how the conventions of this well-known dramatic epic change in the mouths and actions of women. Our production will reveal what happens when world order is truly disrupted and the supernatural intervenes. Our women are on the front line and we look to question how gender empowers and restricts them.

Our campaign is looking to raise funds to cover the production costs and travel to Edinburgh.

Who are we?
TREAD THE BOARDS THEATRE COMPANY are the resident theatre company at the Attic Theatre on the banks of the river Avon in Shakespeare’s Stratford. Founding members John Partridge and Catherine Prout are this year celebrating 10 years of theatre making and are eager to mark this momentous year by bringing, possibly The Bard’s most favoured play, to life. Being Stratford’s #1 Fringe Theatre Company, it seemed only right and proper to share our project with audiences at the UK’s #1 Fringe Festival – Edinburgh Festival Fringe!

What’s it all about?
Macbeth - Shakespeare's compelling classic tragedy of ambition, bloody chaos, witchcraft and ghosts. In this dark, psychological thriller the predominant theme of the breakdown of order will be heightened by our all-female cast. Our approach to this story will delve deeper to mirror the expectation and struggle for equality within our modern society and question the strengths and weaknesses of gender. During our development process it became evident that this blood-thirsty tragedy took on different dimensions when brought to life by women.

Our small cast of six women will be recreating the battle scenes, Macbeth’s coronation banquet and the procession of ghostly kings – no small feat! They will also be playing multiple characters at a drop of a hat. To say the performance is going to be a ‘full on adventure’ will be putting it lightly!

Where did your idea come from?
As a company founded in Shakespeare’s town, we are passionate about his works and stories. Many of our associate artists living, working and playing all things ‘Shakespeare’ – be it tour-guiding at his birthplace, teaching his works in schools, ushering at his theatre and studying his every word in our ‘free’ time. This project began as a ‘thespian-holiday’ production with an international group of theatre fanatics in a garden in France. One of whom was our associate artist Catherine Pugh, who took on the role of Macbeth. Catherine found this part reignited a burning desire for theatre making and after many years fighting over the limited female roles in Shakepeare’s plays, she approached us with her idea – and here we are!

What happens now?
We are currently in rehearsal, and will preview our show at the Attic Theatre (30th & 31st July), before heading up to Edinburgh to open at the Perth Theatre at theSpace on North Bridge (2nd – 10th August). As we are a small, semi-professional company we will need as much help as we can to share our project with Fringe audiences and have committed to raising funds to cover the costs of this project so that anything we make can go to support our talented ensembled members.

Can I help spread the word?
YES PLEASE.
If you share a link to this campaign we will be over-the-moon!
If you would like to follow us on social media we will be over-the-sun!
If you would like to share our links on social media sites we will be all over the web!! We have lots of appreciation to go round!

Risks and challenges
The biggest risk for our production concerns our cast. Our ensemble is made up of 6 women, most of whom play multiple characters. Fortunately, our producer is a wonderful performer and if in the unlikely event a cast member were to get struck down with illness, is more than happy to jump right in.
