Allen's Breath of Fresh Air

I thought asking for money would be the hardest thing to do, but I found breathing to be harder.

After months of preparation, this is the last thing I need in order to receive a double lung transplant.  Asking for financial help is really taking a toll on me.  In my life, I have helped other individuals and organizations raise funds for projects and service to the community, but this is different. Very different.

My name is Allen Holliman (I go by Al).  My journey began in March of 2013, when I was diagnosed with severe emphysema and pulmonary fibrosis. As I searched Dr. Google, I found the typical life expectancy after diagnosis is about 5 years. Since I was diagnosed by accident, somehow, I figured I would go longer.  I am now coming up on my 5th year since diagnosis.  I have IPF (idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis) and without a transplant, I am being told I won't see my 6th year anniversary. IPF is a scarring of the lung tissue causing shortness of breath until lung capacity can no longer sustain breathing, and eventually life.  The cause of this disease is unknown.

While I've made carrying an oxygen tank a stylish trend, I'm afraid this is no longer working.  My only hope is for the lung transplant.  With the support of my wife and family, we have pursued a transplant program with MUSC.  For months, I have fought to condition the rest of my body (which is ironically in great condition) and I'm ready to do this.  My mental strength is focused and ready for the battle ahead.  The only thing holding me back is money.

This process is very costly.  The transplant can cost $1.5 million and while health insurance covers the "transplant" there are so many things they do not cover. Recovery will take about a year to get back to a more normal state of life.  I am asking for $50,000 to assist me through this process.  There will be medications that are only partially covered, as well as nursing care. Since we live so far from MUSC we must stay locally there for a minimum of 3 months. There is rent, travel, meals, and parking for the 3 months, and then a loss of income throughout the 1-year process.

I've been a fighter for my whole life.  I've worked hard for my family, my community, and my faith.  I want to keep fighting.  I am blessed to be considered and qualified for a transplant.  The doctor's say I am ready and want to do this now, as my best chances are while I'm still strong enough.  My two daughters, my wife, my brother and his family, and my friends are all supportive. With them, and God at my side, I feel that I have a good chance to live a longer life.

I am asking for donations to keep me fighting.  Please consider donating and click on link below.  It may be a tax deductible donation.

Your donation means more than I could ever say.  We thank you in advance for your generosity!
