All For Paula, With Love...

Let Everything You Do Be Done In Love - 1 Corinthians 16:14

That describes Paula Hernandez’s humanity in a beautiful nutshell. Paula’s professional and personal life has always been about caring, inspiring/teaching and helping others - and always, always, with an authentic care and love for everybody she meets, has worked with, and been responsible for in her life.

Paula was a teacher/special education teacher with the Los Angeles Unified School District for close to 25 years, and recently celebrated a decade at Casa de Amma, a nonprofit long term independent apartment community for adults with special needs. Paula is also responsible for the care and well-being of an adult brother with Down syndrome. Paula has devoted her life and career to lifting and inspiring our most beloved, and her life’s journey very much reflects her giving human spirit and her commitment to making the lives of others happy, safe, and loved.

Unfortunately, our beautiful friend was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent a bilateral mastectomy a few weeks ago and will next undergo a grueling and extensive treatment of chemotherapy and radiation. Her oncologist estimates that treatment will extend well into next year and predicted to take approximately 6 months. Paula remains strong and steadfast: a positive attitude determined to fight this disease and a faith to come back stronger like so many brave cancer warriors before her.

Consequently, we are pulling tightly and strongly together for our dearest friend, but we know this experience will prove challenging both personally and financially. Paula has been out from work going on three weeks now and future treatment will require more missed work. The medical bills have started coming in, and we, her teacher friends, are trying hard to help as much as we can to alleviate the financial stresses that come with illness, plus provide the extra resources needed for the best care. In a perfect world, we wish she didn’t have to worry about this side of illness, disease is already so unpredictable, but instead, we wish and pray that she have the complete peace of mind necessary to focus only on her healing. For everything wonderful Paula has meant to so many, we want to provide her with no less as she continues to fight for her recovery.

However, being a career public school teacher doesn’t allow for riches or strong investments, haha, and we ask with all the grace possible in this very difficult situation for prayers and that you please consider a monetary gift that can help Paula return to wellness and back to what she loves doing most, helping make lives better and doing it with great love.

Our profound gratitude and appreciation for your kindness and generosity, and for being a wonderful gift to a beautiful soul.

Warmest regards,
Manuela Varela (Teacher/Nestor Language Academy Charter School)
