Alkhatibs rebuild after fleeing war

Donation protected
Imagine for a moment that you are living your life – happy with your family, your own business, your community, and then, one day, all of that changes. It starts with news of conflict from a city far away from your own. You think, “this must be a localized conflict, and will be resolved soon.” Before you know it, you see the conflict spreading across your country, until finally it reaches YOUR city, YOUR neighborhood, YOUR home, YOUR family.

This is what happened to my adopted family, the AlKhateebs- a beautiful, caring, loving, warm and absolutely hilarious family of 6 that found themselves fleeing the war in Syria, across the border to Jordan, to find themselves in a refugee camp. Within days of their arrival in Jordan, their camp was hit with tear gas- children and adults choking on fumes, and once again they were forced to flee.

After 4 years of enduring horrid conditions and undergoing vast and comprehensive security checks, they arrived safely to our welcoming shores. When I met this family, I looked into the mother’s eyes and there was an instantaneous connection, a Hotel Transylvania style “zing”, a deep exchange of love and compassion- from one mother to another.

In the few months they’ve been here, the father has found work, and both the mother and grandmother have been busy getting the children acclimated and they themselves are taking English classes. We can already communicate without a translator! The level of motivation and drive this family has is inspiring and humbling.

While they call me their “angel” for helping them to rebuild their lives and thrive in our land of opportunity, I see them as my “angel family” for showing me how, despite the horrors they witnessed, the pain they felt, and extreme violence they endured, their hearts are still so open and pure and the love seeps from their hearts into those of my own family.

As they are trying to rebuild, I have started this page to raise funds for upcoming expenses: a security deposit on an larger apartment (currently living in 500 sq/ft for family of 6), purchase of a vehicle to get to work. Please, help this loving family with whatever you can. $5, $10, $1000, whatever is possible. Every dollar helps. Thank you all for your love and support!
