Yesterday afternoon Alistair underwent a second surgery that will allow his leg to heal properly in preparation for a prosthetic. The surgery was successful, but a little longer than expected which is tough when you're not allowed to eat anything in preparation.
The support for this campaign from the community has been amazing. Alistair's employer The Bike Gallery has been incredibly supportive both in the campaign and in helping him sort out his insurance benefits. His co-workers have even organized meals for those staying at the hospital with Alistair. His Monster Media team-mates, O2 Endurance training partners, fellow OBRA racers, customers that he's met through the shop and those touched by the story have all reached out to uplift Alistair and his family members who have been a steady presence at the hospital since Sunday morning.
It is still unclear what lies ahead for Alistair, but it will certainly be a physical, emotional and financial challenge. While Alistair DOES have medical insurance, the driver of the vehicle didn't which means that he'll rely heavily on fundraising efforts to cover expenses not covered by his policy. His insurance provides for short term disability, up to 3 months, but his recovery is expected to be at least a year.

The outpouring of love and support for Alistair has been truly awesome! Together we have financed the cost of a prosthetic to restore his mobility, but let's don't stop there. Let's see if we can cover the costs for him to return to school and earn his bachelor's degree. This terrible accident has set him on a new path in life. We have the opportunity to turn what could have been a tragedy into a springboard to achieving his dreams.

On the morning of Sunday May 10th our friend Alistair Corkett was nearing the end of his weekly long ride when he was struck by a truck at a dangerous local intersection. He is alive but his leg was severed in the accident and doctors were unable to save it. He is presently in the ICU recovering from his first round of surgery and will undergo more surgery in the coming days. As you can imagine he's in a great deal of pain and is facing a lot of uncertainty about the road ahead.
Alistair is a passionate and hard working young man with a wonderful sense of humor and soft spoken manner. In addition to his passion for cycling he is working toward a degree in History and plans to pursue a career in teaching. Many of us have watched him sacrifice and grind for the past two years overcoming obstacles to set himself on course to further his education and know that this is simply another obstacle that he will overcome.
The severity of this accident could have killed him and he's in a pretty dark place right now about losing his leg, but we are hopeful that we can mobilize the community to lift him up a bit and let him know that he doesn't have to face this obstacle alone. We are hopeful that the community will come together on Alistair's behalf to provide resources and support as he embarks on what will be a painful and lengthy recovery.
I invite you, his friends, family, competitors and training partners to join us in this process. In the short term he will undergo more surgeries and physical therapy, but in the long term we expect to see Alistair back on his bicycle, completing his History degree and becoming a teacher. At just 22 years old Alistair still has much to live for and share with the world. Please support Alistair by giving whatever you can.
