To know Alicia is to love Alicia.. My mother, Alicia Appel has a different role in the lives of everyone that has been fortunate enough to know her: loving wife, beloved mother, doting grandmother, sister, trusted friend and confidant. But under any of those titles, she is loved and valued, and she has touched those around her with warmth and her limitless love- always there with a gentle smile, a kind word. My mom is a shining light when all other lights seem dim, always ready to share her time, her wisdom and her life stories. She is the cornerstone of her family, a true matriarch.
When my mother was diagnosed with COPD/Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease a few years ago, she surged forward, hiding what the illness was doing to her so that she wouldn't be a burden to her family and her friends. Ultimately, the disease overtook her and she had a choice to make: a harrowing double lung transplant, or face an unfairly early demise. She chose to have the transplant, and on
July 25th 2018, my mother received a new pair of lungs. It's been a constant battle since the operation; she had a stroke, more procedures than we can keep track of, and there seem to be more setbacks than steps ahead. With everyone rallying around her, and with positive energy, Alicia can pull through this - but there's one obstacle in her way, the anti-rejection and other assorted medications to help her recover and keep her with us have reached the unfathomable co-payment of thousands per month. Needless to say, that burden is too much for her and my father Steve to carry with their limited income.
