Aliabad Hospital Supply Fundraiser

Hello everyone! I posted on Facebook the other day about the Aliabad Teaching Hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan, one of the first modern hospitals in the country, where I was able to interview the chief of the hospital, Dr. Azizi, a general surgeon by trade, and take a tour of the ED, OR, and wards. In response to my post, there was a large outpouring of support and desire to contribute financially from my Facebook community, so I am creating this Gofundme to raise some money to help the hospital out.

The hospital is affiliated with the neighboring Kabul Medical Sciences University, which has over 3000 students in medicine, dentistry, nursing, and applied sciences, that perform their clinical duties under the guidance of over 80 senior attendings and lecturers. The hospital has 250 beds, including capabilities for neurosurgery, urology, orthopedics, emergency surgeries, medicine, neuropsychiatry, cardiology (but no cardiac surgery or cath yet), and post stroke care. They had only 9 deaths last week in spite of shortage of supplies for anesthesia, sterilization, endotracheal tubes, gloves, wound care, IV fluids and access, medications, etc. This is an incredible achievement, given the frequency of bombings in Kabul by the Taliban these days, with hundreds of people wounded and killed each month, sometimes at inopportune times like the middle of the night with no staff and no supplies. As you can see in the picture, the have a bare bones OR, with few staff, little equipment, and minimal anesthesia.

Meanwhile, they are building a new internal medicine ward, and changing the old one into an outpatient department to help the ever increasing population of Kabul, which has increased from nearly 1 million at the outset of the war with the Russians in 1979, to 6 million today. Dr. Azizi admitted that he sometimes has to buy medication and supplies from his own personal funds, which amount to 8000 Afghanis (120 dollars) per month, to meet the hospital's needs. He said they need help, and is hoping I can obtain that assistance through my platform of media and my online community of friends and family.

This hospital was built by my great grandfather, Abdul Giyas Han, who was one of the top civil engineers in the country, in 1932. There is a pillar of commemoration situated across the street from the medical school in the median of the road, which honors him and the Turkish doctor who brought the concept of western medicine to Kabul. Also, the chief of the hospital before the war many decades ago was my great uncle Dr. Alem Karim, also an internal medicine doctor by trade like myself, who was the professor of the current chief that I interviewed. Small world!

I am here in the country for another week as part of my round the world journey, so I can ensure the money is used the right way, as I would buy and deliver the supplies myself before I leave. I would be greatly appreciative and thankful of any contribution, small or large. Thank you very much for your consideration!
