ALFRED’S STORY
Alfred Marino needs our help. Alfred lost his hearing from German measles at the age of three, but regained hearing in one ear when he was forty-one years old after receiving a cochlear implant. Though regaining his hearing in one ear has changed his life, Alfred still struggles from total hearing loss in the other ear.

Though Alfred has tried over and over to convince his medical insurance provider to cover coclear implant surgery for his other ear, they have repeatedly refused, stating that one ear is sufficient for hearing. If you could hear out of only one ear, would you feel that was sufficient?? For those who may not know, a cochlear implant is an electronic device that restores partial hearing to individuals with severe or total hearing loss who do not benefit from a conventional hearing aid. It is surgically implanted in the inner ear and activated by a device worn outside the ear. Unlike a hearing aid, it does not make sound louder or clearer. Instead, the device bypasses damaged parts of the auditory system and directly stimulates the nerve of hearing, allowing individuals who are profoundly hearing impaired to receive sound. The total cost for Alfred’s second surgery is $70K.
