I'm a PhD Candidate in Political Science who will be conducting fieldwork research in South Africa mid-October - January! Conducting research abroad is expensive, and my funding is limited. I worked three jobs this summer to pay for my trip to South Africa but need funding to be able to actually do the research.
Besides the basics of travel, accommodations and food as I travel to Johannesburg and Pretoria, I need to invest in the tools of our trade. Things like digital recording equipment to capture and archive interviews, code both qualitative and quantitative data, analytic software, travel health insurance are just a few of the things that will help me succeed in this endeavor..
About my Research
My research seeks to contribute to the field of Conflict Resolution pertaining to social and political justice. I am writing my dissertation on prosecutorial discretion in human rights cases in South Africa. In other words, I'm researching how prosecutors make the decision to prosecute or to not prosecute violations of human rights. I will be interviewing public prosecutors, investigators, and public officials, exploring the ways in which such actors arrive at their decisions to prosecute or not prosecute. The goal is to have a better understanding of human rights trials, and the factors that prosecutors consider when deciding to hold perpetrators accountable for past abuses.
