My name is Alex. This fall, instead of going to college I an going to be apart of a program called Global Citizen Year. Global Citizen Year (globalcitizenyear.org) is a premier bridge year Fellowship designed to unleash the potential of a new generation of global leaders. Each year, they recruit and train a diverse corps of high- potential students and immerse them in Africa, Latin America, and Asia during a bridge year after high school. Through world-class training, homestays and individual apprenticeships, our Fellows develop the self- awareness, cross-cultural fluencies and grit that will accelerate their path into college, careers, and a global economy.
I will be travelling to Ecuador. As a part of being in the Ecuador program, I will live with a host family throughout my stay in Ecuador while also taking part in an apprenticeship. The main focuses of the apprenticeships in Ecuador are education, environmental conservation, agriculture, and social enterprise. I hope to get involved in projects that matter to this new community and gain exposure and experience in a new field that I might have never known I might be interested in.
For those of you who know me, it is a known fact that I have lived in a city all of my life and I've only ever known urban areas. I often found myself limited to my experiences with nature and the world outside of city living. Through this bridge year, I hope become better equipped to adjust to different environments, learn to better self-sufficiency, and learn my role in the world as something more than a student.
My high school blessed me with opportunities to travel because they financially supported me. I do not want money to be the reason I can't be apart of this amazing program, as money often limits my participation. These donations will help me cover my tuition to participate, my visa, my shots, my daily living expenses in Ecuador, and medical costs related with living in Ecuador. Any donation helps.
Apart from this campaign, all Fellows are charged with raising $2,500 to support the scholarship fund for our bridge-year peers. By donating, you will help ensure Global Citizen Year is an experience accessible to all students in situations similar to mine.
