Hi Everyone,
Some of you may already know my story, but for those of you who don't, here it is.
This past July, while vacationing with friends in Ocean City, I suffered from a neck injury causing fractures in my C6 and C7 vertebrae. Although my spinal cord was not severed in any way, it was severely damaged, causing paralysis from my upper chest, down.
I spent the following 7 weeks in rehabilitation at UPMC Mercy. Thanks to my Doctors, Nurses, and especially my Therapists, I made tremendous progress in regaining function in my arms and fingers as well as core control and balance. After returning home in September, I started going to outpatient therapy on a weekly basis to continue my progress.
Although I have made great strides in the months since the accident, there is only so much my therapists are equipped to do. I have been on the look out for research studies and programs that I can participate in and stumbled upon the amazing organization,Project Walk. Their facilites are equipped to get all patients in a standing position to be able to open up and exercise muscles that have become neglected. They have several videos of success stories, especially with individuals that have my level of injury. Some patients have even been able to stand and take steps on their own . With the amount of progress I have already achieved, I think this would be a huge opportunity for me to see if I can take it a little further.
A large bonus, one of the few facilities they have is located in Las Vegas, which is where I called home at the time of the accident. After being admitted to the hospital for surgery, my best option was to return to my home state of PA, and I have yet to return to Vegas. Taking part in this program will not only be tremendously beneficial to my recovery, but it will also give me the opportunity to visit and spend time with friends I haven't been able to see since before the accident.
The problem, and the reason I'm asking for help, is the program isn't covered by insurance and it is a little out of reach financially.
Any contribution would be greatly appreciated and will no doubt be a huge help on the rest of my road to recovery!!
