Hi everyone,
My name is Alex and I am a transgender woman. I’m a Malaysian-Canadian graduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison about to finish my master’s degree at the end of summer, around which point I plan to get gender confirmation surgery. My graduate student insurance will likely cover this, which is great – however, I am still left with much of the out-of-pocket costs to bear on my own. I am an international student which means I am prohibited from working more than 20 hours a week, all of which are allocated to my current job as a research assistant at the university. This prevents me from working extra jobs to help meet this shortfall in the meantime. I will leave for greener pastures at the end of the summer but until then, having to pay for multiple transition-related expenses with the meagre RA salary of an arguably frugal mid-20s graduate student is getting increasingly more difficult.
I’m raising funds for my wider gender transition expenses, which include (i) face and (ii) bottom laser (the latter necessary for surgery; this is supposed to be covered later on but I still need to pay a significant amount up front), (iii) hormones (insurance doesn't cover estrogen, lol) and (iv) a general recovery fund for after the surgery, which will go toward miscellaneous medical expenses and additional day-to-day expenses incurred due to the surgery. I’m also including more information on how I got here, which I think is worth telling, because it’s relevant. These are in separate sections because some of it is heavy stuff (content warnings below), which I don’t want to expose folks to unknowingly. At the time of writing this I haven’t finished putting words on paper but I wanted to share this to get started on fundraising.
