Alexander's Medical Recovery

Donation protected

Alexander is a 5 year old with lots of energy.  He loves playing with his brothers and his mom.  However, he has to be careful because he uses hearing aids.  He sometimes forgets he is wearing them and they disappear.  There are many stories his mom has told about the family looking for Alexander's hearing aids.  However, he  has learned how to navigate the world and is polite when asked what is wrong with his ears or what he is wearing on his head.  At times those comments are hurtful and he gets upset because he does not understand why people can be so mean.

Alexander will start on his journey  for the Medpor surgical implants at the end of January 2018. Each surgery can be as long as 10 hours. During the first two surgeries he will need to have skin grafted from his abdomen and hip area to make each ear implant.
The process will be in 3 phases: Phase 1 will be an implant on his right ear, Phase 2 will be the implant on his left ear and Phase 3 will consist of the opening of the ear canals and magnet implants to hold his hearing aids.

He is excited because he will no longer have to wear the headband that holds his hearing aids and will not have to worry about losing or breaking them, but most importantly he can't wait to have his new ears.

His mother was fortunate to find a foundation that will cover most of the cost of the surgery,  but she will still have a medical expense of $5000 and will need money for gas, food, and other necessities.

His mother, who is a single parent,  has Alexander and his twin brother Andrew and their older brother Cristian, plus her mother and father live with her.  She is resposible for the entire household, with very little resources and support.  She does have a full-time job, but will have to take anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks of unpaid time off to be with Alexander during his recovery for each surgery.  In the first two-weeks, he will need to see the doctor 3 times, which will mean traveling to Los Angeles, a 4 hour round trip for each doctor's appointment.  Claudia always has a smile on her face and you would never know how stressed she is worrying about how she will get by without pay for an unknown amount of time.

Claudia works hard every day helping students be successful, sometimes staying late or working with them on her own time.  She has a caring heart and would be the first to help a co-worker, student, or friend in need.  Please help me, help my friend.
