Alejandra Hernandez Medical Fund

On June 30, 2017, after a busy Friday afternoon at ABRA, our CSR Alejandra Hernandez had the unimaginable happen.  Alejandra, refered to by her friends and co-workers as Ale, is a 28 year old mother of an eleven year old boy. She has been with ABRA for less than a year, but has demonstrated a strong work ethic and is an overall pleasent person to work with and be around.

Ale left work that Friday, laughing and joking with fellow employees about a future girls trip to Las Vegas.  There was no indication that tragedy was in the midst for her.  Ale left work just before 6:00 PM, and was literally in an ambulance fighting for her life within the next few hours.  As Ale was hanging out with some friends, she suddenly felt her body changing, and paralysis setting in.  She did not understand what was happening, and soon ended up in the ICU at Denver Health for the next few weeks.  Ale had suffered a stroke that was caused by a blood clot the size of a plum between her skull and her brain.

Initially, Ale was only given a 5% chance of making it through the night.  She has already beat those odds, and continues to fight for her son’s sake.   Although the medical teams were able to remove the majority of the blood clot, they also removed a portion of her skull in order to allow the swelling to decrease.  Her head was shaved, and nearly twenty staples remain in her scalp today.  A small portion of the blood clot also remains, as it would be too risky to try and remove that portion at this time.

For now, Ale is in rehabilitation at Denver Health, working on the possible restoration of functionality of the left side of her body.  After her stroke, the entire left side of her body was left paralyzed and she is very exhausted from the trauma in general.  Although she has an extremely positive attitude about her recovery, the rehabilitation process will take many more months.

When speaking with her sister, she wanted to make sure we all knew about Ale's beautiful soul.  She has a fighting spirit and is working so hard to get better for her son.

This event has already caused a major hurdle in Ale’s day to day life, and could likely ruin her financially.  At the ABRA Wheat Ridge store level we are doing what we can in terms of monetary donations and continued support to her and her family,  with regular calls and visits to the hospital.  However, she needs all of the help she can get with a growing young boy, and living expenses that continue while she is in the hospital.

If you can find it within your means to help Ale and her family at this time, we know they  would be most grateful and appreciative.   This is one of our own, and we are counting on Team ABRA to do the right thing!!
