On September 1, 2019, Hurricane Dorian became an unprecedented, destructive Category 5 over the islands of The Abacos, Bahamas. This Category 5 hurricane designation was so unexpected, it shocked the world at large. Once it transformed into a rare Category 5 hurricane over the islands of The Abacos and then made it slowly to the Grand Bahama island on Sept 2, it left the once pristine landscape ravaged and flattened. The 185 mph sustained winds accompanied by over 40 hours of torrential rain, forever changed the lives of thousands of Bahamians and their families. Many lost their homes, vehicles, tangible possessions and unfortunately many lost family members or their lives. Warm memories of their once calm life within The Abacos and Grand Bahama is now just a figment of their imagination it seems. The road to recovery will be a very long one. Not only will Bahamians need financial and physical goods support, they will also need help psychologically. Having to see dead bodies floating around during the intensity of the hurricane or scattered along the road once the waters receded, or having to flee to their attic as a result of the 20-30 feet waters, or letting go of family members in the midst of the storm surge as they risked their lives for safety is just a bit of the psychological recovery Bahamians will have to face in the days and years to come. This hurricane impacted and displaced almost 20% of The Bahamas’ population. Consequently, Hurricane Dorian, has now been classified as the 'worst hurricane' in the history of the Bahamas…with2% of the Bahamas’ population still missing.
As a result, a group of Bahamians and other Caribbeans living in Calgary, Alberta, Canada are seeking your support to help mediate the pain of those in The Bahamas in response to this tragedy. We are organizing relief efforts to assist some of the most needed individuals. I.e. Kids left homeless and parentless, families that had everything taken away, special needs individuals etc. The distribution of the donated goods & funds will be organized by trained local social workers, psychologists and other professionals who have been working day in and day out at the most impacted and ravaged sites. This ensures that the identified families in need are the recipients of this much needed assistance.
We, therefore appeal to you or your organization to assist us with a generous donation in this 'Life Restoration' endeavour. We can assure you, that we will be accountable with every dollar donated and will update donors by providing photos of the distribution where possible, while remaining sensitive to this grief-stricken community.
Thanks in advance,
