My Story
Hello! My name is Alayna and I am 8 years old. I was diagnosed with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex when I was only 3 months old. My disease has made it very hard for me to learn and develop like other kids my age and when I was 6, they told my family that I have Autism.
I had a really tough time when I first started school. Since I couldn’t say very many words, it was hard for people to understand what I wanted and I would get SO MAD! I would scream and cry – but even that didn’t seem to work. Most days, I was very unhappy to be at school.
Thankfully, I see school differently now. I have been at my school for two years – and I absolutely love it! I am learning SO much. They taught me to use a PECS book and I can now speak in complete sentences without using it - I don’t have trouble with people understanding what I want! I know all of my ABC’s and I am even learning to read sight words. And then there’s the bathroom – I used to be very afraid of it, but now I am almost completely potty trained. I have lots of friends and I enjoy playing with them every day.
At my school, there are wonderful people that come help me. I get to see an Occupational Therapist and a Speech Language Pathologist twice each week. They always have new and exciting ways for me to learn. I also get support from a Communication Consultant (she helps us learn how to use our PECS books) and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Not to mention, I have two of the most amazing teachers that love me and have taught me so many new things!
How YOU can Help
My school provides so many things that I desperately need – however it is very expensive. I get a scholarship and financial aid, but this year there is a lot leftover that my Mommy is trying to pay. Your help, no matter how big or small, will get me closer to staying where I am most happy and have the support I need to continue to grow.
