Alaka'i O Kauai Charter School

Alaka`i O Kaua`i Charter School began its mission in 2013 with a small, passionate group of parents and educators with a big vision - to create a new school for Kaua'i. It has been a long 5 year journey to get to the point of opening the school's doors as a K-5 elementary program in August 2018. The school was unanimously approved in 2016 by the Hawaii State Charter Commission as a K-8  public charter school, adding on successive grades in the years to come.

The  school's mission is to provide a progressive, innovative curriculum that prepares students for a successful future. Due to the nature of the school philosophy and collaborative learning atmosphere, it intends to be a model of creativity, problem solving and flexibility.

***WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP***

Currently, charter schools in Hawai`i are funded at about 50% of Department of Education schools. We are not allocated funds for start-up costs, transportation or facilities, which are typically upwards of $250,000. Also, charter schools are not allowed to incur debt to cover expenses prior to opening. Therefore, all charter schools in Hawai`i must actively fundraise!!

OUR GOAL: To raise $25,000 to fully furnish our school.

We have the unique opportunity to attain all the furnishings we need from a few schools which were recently closed in California -- at a greatly discounted price!! Furnishings may also be acquired from a private school that has closed on Kaua'i. We are raising the funds for both shipping from California to Kauai, and to purchase the necessary items to furnish our school. *
Please see detailed list below.

Our classrooms will be different from the traditional classroom because they are designed to support the dynamic and collaborative nature of our program. Active seating may be used as well as round student activity tables and chairs in lieu of traditional student desks. Reading nooks and quiet spaces for children will be created in each learning space.

Items to be purchased:

- Student seating - both standard chairs & active seating

- Adult-sized chairs

- Administrative seating

- Round student activity tables

- Large rectangular activity tables

- Desks for staff & facilitators (teachers)

- File-cabinets

- Bookcases

- White boards

Although we gladly accept any donation, large or small, the following options for sponsoring an individual, small group, classroom or office are as follows:

- Individual per student sponsorship: $150

- Small group sponsorship (1 round table & 5 chairs): $750

- Classroom sponsorship (5 tables & 25 chairs): $3,750

- Administrative Office sponsorship: $5,000

More about Alaka'i O Kaua'i Charter School:

After a 4 year journey to find a site for our school, we were fortunate enough to acquire an idyllic location at Kahili Mountain Park in Koloa, on the south side of Kaua'i. Our campus is complete with school buildings, an enormous gymnasium, an orchard and plenty of gardening space . This magnificent site will lend itself greatly to our program, having both comfortably spacious classrooms for our learners, as well as plenty of green outdoor play areas and natural habitats to explore.

In our program, teachers and administrators are committed to interdisciplinary instruction with equal emphasis on teaching to the whole child academically, socially, and emotionally.  The school is founded on three critical components, using project-based learning (PBL), Social Emotional learning (SEL) and Individual Learning Plans  to support it's learners in their educational path. Students will learn and perpetuate the cultural traditions and values of Hawai`i while acquiring and demonstrating 21st Century Skills (collaboration, creativity, communication, critical thinking/problem solving, and caring) that are needed to lead productive lives and contribute meaningfully to society.

We want to express our gratitude for your support  ~
