We at  Akili Dada have a goal of raising $50,000 to take education to girls that have never been to school, in Samburu County, Kenya, in the quest to leave no girl behind.

What does Akili Dada do?

We are an African Leadership Incubator, anchored in the ethos that girls and young women CAN, DO, and LEAD. Our mission focuses on girls and women from underserved and underprivileged backgrounds, extending opportunities for access to Becoming, Education, Leadership, and Transitions. Through a  multi-method approach that intentionally collaborates with girls, their gatekeepers - teachers, parents, and guardians- and a pool of committed mentors and coaches to ensure girls' access to holistic education with a sharp focus on transitions and lifelong learning opportunities.

What is this project all about?

Girls that live in the interior parts of Samburu County in Kenya have never been to school. This is due to continued harmful cultural practices, early child marriage, and a rich culture that contains elements that violate the rights of women and girls.

Dubbed the Manyatta-Homeschooling program, this pilot project will create a pathway for out-of-school girls to access an informal education for the first time.  The informal education project will equip them with basic literacy, numeracy, and life skills, such as problem-solving and decision-making skills. With an innovative and critical component of the project being mental health and psychosocial support for the girls through a mental health curriculum that Akili Dada developed for girls.

We will work with 10 Manyattas (small community settlements) in Baragoi Sub County in Samburu, engaging 300 girls and young women ages 9 to 16.

What problem are we trying to solve?

According to Amref Health Africa, 90% of women in Samburu County have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM), with 38% being married before they turn 18 years old. In addition, findings from field visits to the Samburu have found that girls and young women in the county, particularly in the manyatta settlements, have never attended school and face significant barriers, including those occasioned by a robust nomadic culture.

Samburu county bears some of the lowest development indicators in the country, with low literacy and numeracy attainment being significantly low.

Our project will address this issue, targeting girls based in Manyatta Settlements who have expressed the will to learn how to read, write and count. Through this project, girls will have a relief from pervasive harmful social-cultural practices, as they will be able to set up small groups that will establish a peer-to-peer support system and transition into the formal school system.

With your support, the Manyatta Homeschooling project will reach 300 girls in 6 months, effectively taking education where they are, and may establish this form of teaching as a solution for school access for hard-to-reach populations.

What impact do we expect the project to have?

 - With $20 per month (per girl), we shall teach essential life skills that will build on equity and knowledge for girls, allowing them to raise to their agency, and make decisions within their lived experiences.

 - With $10 per month (per girl), tools and instruments required for teaching in the manyattas shall be provided, such as learning aids that accelerate the retention of basic, oral literacy, and numeracy skills.

 - $50 per month (per manyatta) will provide teachers and instructors transport to 10 Manyattas to enable them to access the hard-to-reach settlements where girls are. This is critical, as the teachers can only commune girls in their manyattas.

 - $150 per month (per tutor) will remunerate a tutor to ensure 300 girls’ who have never been in school participate in this elementary, bespoke tutoring project. The tutor will be equipped to cater to contextual needs and the insecure nature of the spaces they will be accessing, with the quest to demonstrate that hard to reach populations, do not get left behind.
