A Kidney, for Pete's Sake!

Let's talk a little bit about Pete.
Pete Darling is 38 years old, a self-proclaimed geek who enjoys comic books, war games and truly is a big kid at heart. He has close relationships with his Mom and brother and sister as well as his friends at the local comic shop Heroes' Beacon.
In March 2011 Pete underwent some tests knowing he had a 50/50 chance of developing Polycystic Kidney Disease. A bit to his surprise, he was the 50% he didn't want to be.
Polycystic Kidney Disease is the formation of fluid filled cysts on the kidneys. Kidney failure as a result of Polycystic Kidney Disease is due to pressure from the expanding cysts, compressing the normal kidney tissue and scarring in the normal support tissue of the kidney.
At the time of diagnosis Pete's kidneys were only functioning at 30%. Since then Pete has made some lifestyle adjustments to prolong the life of his kidneys for as long as possible.
As of today Pete's kidneys are at a low 7.3% functionality and he is in the assessment process to be put on the transplant list.
As his need for dialysis, and eventually a transplant, grows near, so do the increasing costs of medications, time missed from work due to appointments and so on.
During the coming months and years, while Pete undergoes the dialysis process and eventually a transplant, he will need to travel to Nova Scotia for the operation itself and, during recovery, will need to have family close at hand to help care for him. With his mother on a fixed income, and Pete's medical benefits only covering his surgery and the bare minimum of medical care, it is critical that, as his friends and family, we come together and help support Pete and his caregivers through this challenging time.
