Greetings,

My name is Akela Heard. I am 22 years old. I attend the University of Mississippi pursing a bachelor degree in criminal justice.

Four years ago, I was sitting in my freshman dorm room, when suddenly , I felt this crucial pain.  I immediately scheduled a doctor's appointment. Once I visited the doctor, she did an ultra sound and Pap smear on me. A week later, I went back to the doctor to get my results. My hands were trembling, heart racing, and legs slightly shaking. She informed me I had a cyst on each of my ovaries the size of a golf ball. Next, she transferred me to a doctor in Jackson, MS to schedule a surgery date which was in December 2011.

After I had my first surgery at the age of 19, I was depressed, confused, and stressed. I had loss between 15-20lbs. I couldn't understand why I was going through so much  pain.  So, in January 2012, I had to go back under the knife because the cysts instantly came back. I became such a stronger person  after my second surgery and felt a whole lot better. In May 2012, the cysts returned. To make a long story short, I've been to three other doctors to discover why these cysts keep coming back. One doctor told me it's nothing he could do for me and I owe him up to $1,500. My next doctor immediately discovered more cysts and diagnosed me with precancerous ovarian cyst. He recently had me on a lot of medication which led me into this deep depression. I still struggle with depression from time to time, so I workout a lot to keep myself occupied. My next surgery will be a hysterectomy. My doctor sent me to visit a Fertility Association in Memphis, TN before making that final decision.  The FA highly recommended me to start depot lupron. I went to my local pharmacy to pick my medicine up. I proudly walked to the cashier to pay for my medicine. The cashier glanced at me and said "It's $3,200." I swiftly gazed at my mom. I would never forget the expression on her face. She appeared to be hopeless because she couldn't help her child.

My doctor bills are ridiculous! It took a lot out of me to ask people from the kindness of their heart to help me reach my goal so I can pay for my doctor bills. I am a college student who doing all I can to make money to help pay for my education, rent, and doctor bills. I wrote a book entitled "Why Do We Hurt The One We Love", I make t-shirts, and I work as a community desk assistant.

Thanks,
