Hello, my name is Ricardo, from Portugal, and I write to you with a heavy heart about my great friend Almasi Mwalami, who lives in Zanzibar, Tanzania. I met him during my honeymoon in September 2024, and since then, we have always kept in touch.

Almasi is 30 years old and is the sole provider for a large family: his wife, two young children (3 years and 7 months old), and two elderly grandparents who live with them. He works as a driver for tourists but does not own the car: he pays 1,000,000 TZS (about €330) per month to the vehicle’s owner. When there are fewer tourists, his income barely covers the fuel — and the family often has nothing to eat.

In recent months:

• The children have fallen ill with recurring fevers; the hospital has not yet found the cause.

• The grandparents need daily medication that the family cannot afford.

• There is a lack of basic food; many times they survive only on rice and water.

Despite the difficulties, Almasi remains humble and grateful. I managed to send him €20 (≈ 60,000 TZS), enough for rice and beans for almost a month — but this is only a temporary fix. They need a lasting solution.

Almasi and his family recorded a video saying “Asante” (thank you in Swahili). They count on our solidarity:

Even €5 can buy 2 kg of rice and 1 kg of beans. Every euro makes a difference!

Apesar das dificuldades, Almasi mantém‑se humilde e grato. Consegui enviar‑lhe 20 € (≈ 60 000 TZS), suficientes para arroz e feijão durante quase um mês — mas isso é apenas um curativo. Precisam de uma solução duradoura.
