“My friend AJ is finally getting top surgery! Yay, how exciting for him to be able to get the gender-affirming procedure he needs! And the procedure will be covered by his health insurance, which is awesome.
We’re fundraising for AJ because AJ works in retail, lives alone, and will need help meeting his basic living expenses while out of work for 2-4 weeks while he recovers. He also may need to quarantine for 2 weeks before surgery which would mean another 2 weeks of lost income.
I am also organizing for him to get pre-cooked meals delivered, so he can get nutritious food to support his healing while he is unable to cook for himself, as well as a weekly cleaning service for the first 2 weeks of his recovery, and a laundry service to take care of his clothes, towels, and sheets for the first 2 weeks as well.
I’ve also included an additional month’s living expenses as many of these will need to be paid in advance even if he can go back to work after 4 weeks of recovery, as I don’t want him to have to worry about getting those bills paid while he’s getting back on his feet.
Let’s come together to support my wonderful, sweet, funny, amazingly creative friend AJ while he goes through a difficult and exciting time. We owe it to our dear trans and non-binary loved ones to support them through the struggles and costs of transition, especially during this time when the US healthcare system is under stress and retail workers are in a particularly insecure position.
I’ve broken down the budget below, in order to be transparent about what the money will be providing for him. As I said, the surgery is already covered, we just want to keep AJ housed, fed, and clothed while his body gets the necessary initial rest and recovery time of 2-4 weeks.
