<div>Hello, our names are Delena and Deana, and we are setting up this GoFundMe campaign on behalf of our beloved sister, Desiree, her loving husband, Rodrigo, and their precious daughter, Aiyana, who is no longer with us. Aiyana took her last breath on Saturday, June 15th in the arms of her loving mother with her devoted father standing over.

<div><strong>Aiyana's Story</strong>
</div>
<div>Aiyana was a vibrant, silly, courageous girl who, at three years old, lit up every room. Despite facing a terrifying, life-limiting genetic diagnosis (more on that below), she taught her mommy and daddy the true meaning of enduring love. It was this enduring love that carried them through countless hospitalizations, surgeries, doctor appointments, feeding tubes, and medications. It carried them through missing out on family events to protect Aiyana’s immune system, never visiting the playground due to her tiny struggling muscles, and all the beautiful milestones that anyone with a long life would have. Mommy and Daddy selflessly sacrificed in order to protect their princess.

<div>Aiyana was born with FBXL4 mitochondrial disease, an extremely rare genetic condition. This disease disrupts the body’s ability to produce energy, leading to severe developmental delays, muscle weakness, and other health complications. Discovered only 10 years ago, there is limited scientific research on FBXL4. With fewer than 150 reported cases in the entire world, there are currently no specific treatments or cures for this condition. The focus is primarily on managing symptoms and improving the quality of life for those affected. The average lifespan of someone with this disease is typically 2 years. According to doctor’s, we were blessed with a bonus year with Aiyana due to the extraordinary care provided by Desiree and Rodrigo. Despite these challenges, Aiyana faced each day with incredible bravery and grace, bringing joy and inspiration to everyone who knew her.

<div><strong>Explanation of FBXL4 Mitochondrial Disease</strong>
</div>
<div>Our bodies have genes made of DNA, which act like instructions for growth and function. FBXL4 is one of these genes. Sometimes, there are changes in genes called alterations. In the FBXL4 gene, these alterations cause problems with how cells produce energy.

<div>For example, imagine your body is like a busy factory. The FBXL4 gene is like a worker in this factory who helps clean up and fix the machines that make energy. If this worker doesn't do their job well, the factory's machines (your cells) start to break down and can't make energy properly. This can make you feel tired, weak, and cause other problems in your body.

<div>Genes are passed from parents to children. Parents with one FBXL4 gene do not show symptoms. Since both of Aiyana’s parents were carriers, she was born with the condition. Unfortunately, genetic screenings before birth do not test for FBXL4. It was one of the worst days of their lives when Desiree and Rodrigo were told by doctors that there are no external factors or actions by parents that can prevent or cure this condition.

<div><strong>Purpose of the Fundraiser</strong>

<div>We are raising funds to cover Aiyana’s memorial expenses, as well as to support Desiree and Rodrigo during this heart-wrenching time. The financial burden of immense medical bills due to multiple hospitalizations for many weeks at a time, including several life extending medical procedures (blood transfusions, surgeries, therapies, medical equipment etc), combined with the costs of a proper farewell for their beloved daughter, is overwhelming. Additionally, Rodrigo is taking a leave of absence from work.

<div>Your contributions will help alleviate these pressures, allowing them to grieve and honor Aiyana’s memory without the added stress of financial strain.

<div>Those lucky enough to be in Aiyana's presence knew one of her favorite words was "Go,” often said excitedly before car rides. In the end, it was this beloved word, said almost daily, that released her from the mortal world—“Go,” whispered lovingly by her parents to her precious soul.

<div>But this time, it meant words no parent should ever have to speak: "You can go, baby girl. We will always love you." Aiyana peacefully departed, surrounded by the immense love of her parents.

<div>After Desiree asked for prayers on social media, a double rainbow appeared that afternoon. When our late grandmother passed away ten years ago, a double rainbow also appeared. For our family, this is a sign that Aiyana will be with beloved family members in heaven.
