The purpose of this GoFundMe is to raise funds for our startup Corax, actually focused on a new medical device for treating children with burn injuries, beginning with those one living in poor countries, such as Africa.

Ci presentiamo, siamo Caterina, Franco e Barbara, un gruppo di giovani ragazzi neolaureati in ingegneria Biomedica, legati dalla passione per la tecnologia e le problematiche sociali.
Per questo motivo, a marzo, dopo aver conseguito le rispettive lauree, abbiamo deciso di raccogliere una sfida: combinare le nostre competenze per provare a lasciare il mondo migliore di come è.
Abbiamo così unito le nostre passioni e competenze e abbiamo fondato Corax, una startup dedita alla progettazione di dispositivi medici a partire dai contesti poveri di risorse. Il nostro desiderio è quello di offrire strumenti efficaci, a basso costo e utilizzabili anche nelle condizioni più estreme, in modo da migliorare le condizioni di salute nelle zone più povere del pianeta. Riteniamo, infatti, che nell’era degli obiettivi di sviluppo sostenibile (Sustainable Development Goals SDGs), la discrepanza di assistenza sanitaria tra i vari paesi non sia più accettabile.
Attualmente stiamo lavorando a Lifebox, un dispositivo medico low cost e trasportabile che permetta il trasporto in sicurezza e il trattamento dei bambini vittime di ustioni.
L’idea nasce da un’esperienza di Caterina in Tanzania, dove ha potuto notare che i luoghi insalubri dove vengono attualmente portati molti bambini ustionati, senza alcuna protezione da infezioni e ipotermia, sono le principali cause di morte per i pazienti.
IL PROBLEMA CHE VOGLIAMO RISOLVERE:
Ogni anno ci sono 11 milioni di ustioni, di cui il 95% in paesi poveri e il 70% hanno meno di 5 anni.
La maggior causa di morte sono le infezioni, che insorgono 4-5 giorni dopo l’incidente.
Trovare una soluzione a quella che è stata definita “crisi sanitaria silenziosa” dall’ Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità è il nostro obiettivo.
Sentire i feedback dei medici con cui parliamo è quello che ci motiva a persistere in questa sfida.
Il nostro dispositivo mira a risolvere i problemi in tali contesti:
a) mancanza di strutture che prevengano le infezioni
b) trasporti per raggiungere gli ospedali sono lunghi e pericolosi
c) medicazioni sono costose
COME:
Con Lifebox , un dispositivo low-cost e user-friendly che riproduce le caratteristiche di una stanza di degenza dei Centri Ustionati occidentali in uno spazio circoscritto al singolo paziente.

Vogliamo ultimare il prototipo che abbiamo progettato in modo da poterlo portare in Uganda e Tanzania (patiremo il 5 Ottobre), dove ci sono delle strutture sanitarie desiderose di confrontarsi con noi e che possono darci feedback fondamentali per realizzare un dispositivo efficace.
✈ IL VIAGGIO
Il viaggio, durerà tre settimane, tra Uganda e Tanzania: nella prima settimana in Uganda, a Kampala, frequenteremo la design school di dispositivi medici presso l’Uganda Industrial Research Institute, che si terrà dal 7 all’11 ottobre (poiché abbiamo passato la selezione della Design Competition 2019 promossa da ABEC, (African Biomedical Engineering Consortium) e UBORA) e nel contempo andremo in visita alle cliniche e ospedali con cui abbiamo preso contatti nei mesi precedenti per mostrargli il prototipo e ottenere feedback a riguardo.
Successivamente ci piacerebbe andare in Tanzania per due settimane, partire da Dar Er Salaam per poi proseguire verso Iringa e le zone limitrofe, a mostrare il prototipo ai clinici con cui abbiamo parlato in questi mesi.
Questo viaggio è essenziale per noi per comprendere le problematiche e le esigenze di quelle zone e come il dispositivo potrebbe al meglio adeguarsi ad esse.

Il prototipo ad oggi necessita di integrare molte componenti meccaniche ed elettroniche, oltre al fatto che ne stiamo migliorando la struttura passando ad un dispositivo flessibile piuttosto che rigido, cosi che sia ancora piu facile trasportarlo.

We are Caterina, Franco, and Barbara, a team of young biomedical engineers at the University of Bologna, with a shared passion for technology and social issues. That’s why in March we decided to take up this challenge: combine our skills for leaving our world better than how it is now.
For this reason, we put together our passions and skills and we founded Corax, a startup dedicated to the design of medical devices starting from low resources contexts. Our goal is to offer efficient solutions, low cost and suitable for the most extreme solutions in order to improve health conditions in the poorest areas of the planet. We actually believe that in the age of Sustainable Development Goals SDGs (SDGs), the discrepancy between health assistances from different countries is not acceptable anymore.
Right now, we are working on Lifebox, a low cost and transportable medical device allowing safe transportation and treatment of children (between 0-4 y/o) with burn injuries.
The idea was born from Caterina’s volunteering experience in Tanzania, where she realized the inadequacy of the majority of places where children suffering from burns are treated, where there are no protections from infections and hypothermia which are the main causes of death for these patients.
THE PROBLEM WE AIM TO SOLVE:
Every year there are 11 millions of burns, 95% of them take places in poor countries and 70% of victims are children up to 5 years. The major cause of death are infections occurring 4-5 days after the accident.
Find a solution to that who has been defined “Silent Health Crisis” from the WHO (World Health Organizations) is our goal. Feedbacks from doctors we are receiving every day is what gives us reason to persist in this challenge.
Our device aims to solve common issues existing in those countries:
a) The lack of infrastructures preventing infections
b) Long and dangerous transportations to reach hospitals
c) Expensive medications
HOW:
With Lifebox, a low cost and user-friendly device reproducing all the characteristics of a typical hospital room of Western Burn Care Units in a microenvironment confined around to the single patient.
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP:
We need your help to carry on our project.
We need to ultimate our prototype (the first version was developed by Caterina for her Master thesis) so that we can take it to Uganda and Tanzania (we are going to leave for Africa the 5th October), where there are sanitary facilities willing to confront us, giving us crucial feedbacks for realizing an efficient device.
THE TRIP
The trip will last three weeks, between Uganda and Tanzania: in the first week we are going to stay in Kampala, Uganda where we will attend the Design School at the Uganda Industrial Research Institute, which will take place from the 7th – 11th October (we passed the selection of the Design Competition 2019, promoted by ABEC (African Biomedical Engineering Consortium) and UBORA). In the meantime, we are going to visit clinics and hospitals we made contacts with in the past months in order to show them the prototype and receive feedback. After that, we are going to stay for the last two weeks in Tanzania, starting from Dar Er Salaam and then proceeding to Iringa and surrounding areas, showing the prototype to the doctors we got in touch with. This trip is essential for us in order to understand the challenges and needs of those areas and how this device could suit them the most.

Right now the prototype needs to integrate several mechanical and electronics components, besides the fact that we are refining the structure moving to a flexible device instead of a rigid one so that it would be easier to transport it.
