Aidez Paola à replanter son oliveraie

Je m'appelle Paola Messana et je possède sur la côte ouest de la Sardaigne une petite ferme de 4 hectares.

Un incendie terrifiant a ravagé la région ces trois derniers jours : 20.000 hectares de forêts, d'oliveraies et de maquis méditerranéens ont été détruits, des centaines d'animaux, chevaux, ânes, chèvres, moutons, sont morts carbonisés.

J'ai réussi à m'enfuir samedi soir vers le village de Cuglieri, à 5 kilomètres de la ferme, alors que les flammes descendaient déjà l'étroite piste qui mène à ma campagne.

Je suis revenue vingt-quatre heures après constater les dégâts: mon magnifique jardin méditerranéen, qui avait fait l'objet d'une publication dans le magazine Gardenia en septembre 2020, est totalement détruit. Les amandiers sont carbonisés, tout comme les citronniers, les orangers, les mandariniers et les figuiers.

L'oliveraie, qui compte 200 arbres d'une centaine d'années, est partiellement détruite. Pour cette région de Sardaigne connue pour la qualité de son huile d'olive extra-vierge, c'est une tragédie.

Ceux qui ont goûté mon huile ou mon limoncello savent de quoi je parle.

La maison est miraculeusement intacte, le hangar où sont entreposés des meubles de famille aussi. Les flammes se sont arrêtées juste devant la porte, détruisant même la véranda et évidemment tout le mobilier de jardin.

Mon chat a survécu et est revenu vingt-quatre heures après, deux des ânes sont morts carbonisés.

J'ai décidé de replanter une roseraie à la place du jardin méditerranéen, et de remplacer les oliviers morts.

Le prochain verger sera un verger d'agrumes, oranges, citrons et clémentines. Le potager repartira aussi.

J'ai besoin de l'aide de mes amis, ma situation financière ne me permet pas de me lancer seule dans cette entreprise: il faut enlever tout ce qui est mort, labourer, replanter à l'automne.

Ancienne journaliste française en poste en Italie cinq ans, puis en URSS et Russie pendant quinze ans, puis à New York jusqu'en 2012, j'ai des amis dans le monde entier qui se sont émus à la lecture des informations de ces derniers jours.

Ils m'ont suggéré de lancer une campagne de récolte de fonds. Je les en remercie.

J'ai pour l'instant une idée très approximative du coût de cette entreprise, probablement plusieurs dizaines de milliers d'euros, que je n'ai pas.

My name is Paola Messana and I own a small farm of 4 hectares on the west coast of Sardinia.

A terrifying fire has ravaged the region over the last three days: 20,000 hectares of forest, olive groves and Mediterranean scrubland have been destroyed, hundreds of animals, horses, donkeys, goats and sheep, have been burnt to death.

I managed to escape on Saturday evening to the village of Cuglieri, 5 kilometres from the farm, when the flames were already coming down the narrow track that leads to my countryside.

I came back twenty-four hours later to see the damage: my beautiful Mediterranean garden, which was the subject of a publication in Gardenia magazine in September 2020, is totally destroyed. The almond trees are burnt to a crisp, as are the lemon, orange, mandarin and fig trees.

The olive grove, with 200 trees of about 100 years old, is partially destroyed. For this region of Sardinia, known for the quality of its extra virgin olive oil, this is a tragedy.

Those who have tasted my oil or limoncello know what I mean.

The house is miraculously intact, as is the shed where the family furniture is stored. The flames stopped just outside the door, destroying even the veranda and of course all the garden furniture.

My cat survived and came back twenty-four hours later, two of the donkeys were burnt to death.

I have decided to replant a rose garden in place of the Mediterranean garden, and to replace the dead olive trees.

The next orchard will be a citrus orchard, with oranges, lemons and clementines. The vegetable garden will also start again.

I need the help of my friends, my financial situation does not allow me to embark on this venture alone: I have to remove everything that is dead, plough it up and replant it in the autumn.

As a former French journalist who worked in Italy for five years, then in the USSR and Russia for fifteen years, and then in New York until 2012, I have friends all over the world who were moved by the news of the last few days.

They suggested that I launch a fundraising campaign. I thank them for that.

At the moment I have a very rough idea of the cost of this undertaking, probably several tens of thousands of euros, which I do not have.
