<div>Nous sommes une équipe de 11 étudiants de génie mécanique dans la concentration bio-ingénierie à l’Université de Sherbrooke. Nous avons été approchés par une ergothérapeute dans le but d’aider une adolescente atteinte de quadriplégie flasque nommée Maï-Li. Cet handicap engendre une paralysie de ses quatre membres de manière non rigide, c’est-à-dire qu’il n’y a aucune résistance aux mouvements de ses membres. Cependant, Maï-Li a quelques mouvements résiduels au niveau du bras droit. Effectivement, elle est en mesure de plier son bras droit, mais n’est pas en mesure de déplier celui-ci.

<div><strong>Objectifs du projet</strong>
</div>
<div>Le but du projet est alors de concevoir et fabriquer un système d’assistance robotisé pour assister ses mouvements résiduels et accomplir ceux qu’elle ne peut effectuer par elle-même au niveau de son bras droit. Notamment, nous lui permettrons de manger par elle-même. L’utilisation des mouvements résiduels évitera que ses muscles s’affaiblissent. Ce gain d’autonomie sera bénéfique tant à elle qu’à sa famille.

</div>
<div>Nous estimons les coûts du projet à 20 000 $. Nous avons besoin de votre aide afin de financer ce projet et ainsi changer la vie d’une jeune femme. Cet argent servira à acheter des matériaux ainsi que des composants mécaniques et électriques qui composeront le système d’assistance robotisé. À la fin du projet, ce système sera légué à Maï-Li et sa famille.

<div><strong>Introduction</strong>
</div>
<div>We are a team of 11 mechanical engineering students at University of Sherbrooke, Canada, finishing their bachelor’s degree with a major in bioengineering in the upcoming year. An occupational therapist contacted the team to help a young girl with flaccid quadriparesis . This condition causes paralysis in each of her four members, with no rigidity in her joints. However, the girl still has limited control on some movements in her right arm. Notably, she can bend her arm but is unable to bring it back out.

<div><strong>Objectives of the project</strong>
</div>
<div>The goal of the project is to develop and build a robotic assistance system that can assist her remaining movements and help her accomplish movements that she is currently unable to do. This will give her greater autonomy in simple day-to-day tasks, such as eating by herself. The use of remaining control of her right arm to activate the system will prevent muscle atrophy. Also, this gain in autonomy will benefit both her and her family.

<div><strong>Costs of the project</strong>
</div>
<div>The total costs of the project are estimated at 20 000 CAD. We are asking for your help in financing this project and have a positive impact on the life of a young girl. These funds will be used for the purchase of materials as well as mechanical and electrical components that will make up the robotic assistance system. At the end of the project, the final product will be donated free of cost to the young girl and her family.
