Aidan Loney surgery

Donation protected
In March 2009, after noticing an unusual limp and experiencing pain in his leg, Aidan’s parents scheduled an appointment with his pediatrician. The doctor ordered an x-ray and discovered a mass located just above his right knee. Aidan was immediately scheduled for an MRI and biopsy. On March 16, 2009, at the age of 5, he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer) and started chemotherapy that same week. At the time, the orthopedic oncology surgeon in Kansas City recommended amputating Aidan’s leg. Fortunately, through the family’s own research, they found a doctor in Tampa, Florida who was willing to save Aidan’s leg. Three and a half months after his diagnosis, the doctor removed the tumor, along with 2/3 of his femur, and performed a total knee replacement. Aidan completed 19 rounds of chemotherapy over the course of 9 months and has had countless surgeries, lengthening procedures, and physical therapy sessions over the last 8 years.

Since Aidan is now almost 14, the knee needs to be replaced with a larger prosthetic. The family will be travelling back to Florida in July to have this surgery performed. Aidan was declared cured in 2014 and, while the cancer is gone, he still has more surgeries, lengthening procedures, and physical therapy yet to endure. He rarely complains and continues to amaze us with his strength, determination, and endurance.
