A few weeks ago, my parents' home caught fire. Thank the Lord, no one was hurt. A small heater exploded in my cousin's bedroom, and now their lives are in shambles.

My parents, Chasity and J.R. Mcelroy, are hardworking, salt-of-the-earth, Jesus-loving people. They are the owners and sole employees of a small construction business. My mother takes care of my mentally challenged cousin of 38, Nikky, and my nephew of 3, Kylon. My stepfather just had multiple surgeries in 2024: a kidney removed due to cancer and heart stents put in. Yet, they are still climbing that ladder to feed their family.

The fire burned only one room, but that was enough. Smoke and water damage have condemned their home and destroyed precious memories. They built this home. Mom and J.R. framed those walls. My younger siblings were raised in this home. Every family celebration has been followed by a gathering in this home. Every person we know in need of help has taken refuge at my mother's home.
