As we are all aware, Hurricane Maria left a trail of destruction throughout the island of Puerto Rico. Millions were left without food, water, electricity, and live with a dwindling sense of hope for a speedy recovery. The island's economy was not in good shape to bear this impact.
My immediate family moved to the states some 23 years ago. We left behind our grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, lifelong friends, and a wonderful home whose culture we carry with us every day.
We can't allow ourselves to feel helpless to the people who extend their generosity in every direction no matter how little they have to give.
My Grandparents are proud, humble, pure, and loving people. I can say the same for the rest of my family that remains there. They won't ask for help so it is time for us to help them.
I'm hoping to raise $10,000 to lessen the burden of a slow recovery and help them inevitably help their loved ones and neighbors. We grew up in such a tight knit community and I'm sure many will appreciate any love thrown their way.
All proceeds will be divided and deposited into accounts to provide all things necessary to survive and recover for as long as possible. This includes: food, medical supplies and prescriptions, gas, water, generators for long-term use, rebuilding my Aunt's home, etc.
Due to limited communication, we don't really have a timeline for banks to be opened and general infrastructure to be restored. We'll be doing everything we can in the meantime to prepare them for the long road ahead of them. They live far from metropolitan areas and we fear they may be the last to see restored water and electricity.
I've seen my family struggle for too long.
This is my first time doing this sort of thing. I want to help the people who've always sent me a birthday card filled with money they worked hard for. Money they could have used themselves. I want to repay them for all of that love and make them feel like this isn't the end.
