<div>On the morning of Saturday, November 8, 2025, Officer Smith, age 59, was shot and killed while on duty at the WakeMed Garner Healthplex in Garner, North Carolina. According to officials, a struggle ensued in the emergency department lobby before the fatal shot was fired. A person of interest has since been taken into custody, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

<div>Officer Smith faithfully served the WakeMed Police Department for more than 12 years, protecting hospital staff, patients, and families with compassion and professionalism. Before joining WakeMed, he proudly served the Town of Knightdale, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues and community. Those who worked alongside him describe him as kind-hearted, dedicated, and deeply committed to helping others.

<div>Beyond the badge, Roger was a loving son and devoted caregiver to his mother, whom he had been caring for in recent years. His loss leaves an immense void not only in his family but also within the tight-knit community of Wake County law enforcement professionals who considered him one of their own.

<div>As we grieve this devastating loss, Back The Blue NC, Inc. has established this official GoFundMe fundraiser to support Officer Smith’s family during this unimaginable time. Our nonprofit is 100% volunteer-run, and 100% of proceeds will be donated directly to Officer Smith’s grieving family to assist with funeral expenses, ongoing care for his mother, and other immediate needs.
