As many of you know, my best friend was diagnosed with acute transverse myelitis from West Nile virus. Less than 1% of people who contract west Nile develop this so there is not much research on it. Kayla lost the ability to walk and see on October 10, 2025. She was admitted to the hospital where they did every test they could think of. The MRI showed inflammation inside her spine, which was causing her so much pain and also causing her to lose the ability to walk. They said it was the worst they have ever seen. The CT scan also showed blood clots in both of her lungs. She was extremely lucky that they were small enough when they passed her heart that she did not lose her life. Her heart is working hard fighting this virus, making it hard to do physical therapy. Her heart rate jumps up to 200 while trying to walk with physical therapy. She will soon be transferring over to a rehab facility where she will be for several weeks, working on gaining muscle strength back. They do not know much about her diagnosis or West Nile disease, so Neurology said she may or may not completely regain her muscle strength back. However, the nerves in her spine have shown no improvement. There is nuero doctors from California and Arizona as well as Louisville looking into her case to figure out the best care possible. During this time, her boyfriend continues to work full-time and take on all the responsibilities as well as care for Kayla. He is going to have to take off work for her therapies and possibly on her bad days once she gets home. We don’t know yet if they are going to have to add a walk-in shower or any other accommodations to their home. We also do not know if her Insurence is going to cover all her medical bills. They have 4 beautiful babies that miss their mom and are ready for her to come home. If you are able to donate and help them through this tough time and take a little bit off their plate, we would very much appreciate it. Thank you!
